From Studio to Foundry: What Happens After the Clay Is Finished

For sculptors working toward bronze, the clay is only the first draft — a model destined to be translated into metal by a foundry. The road from studio to foundry is one of the oldest and most exacting processes in art, and most of it happens out of the artist's hands.
The Mold That Captures the Original
Before any metal is poured, the foundry makes a mold of the finished sculpture. A flexible rubber or silicone skin is brushed over the original to capture every fingerprint and tool mark, then backed by a rigid "mother mold" of plaster or fiberglass that holds its shape. From this mold the foundry pulls a hollow wax positive — a wax copy of the sculpture, swirled into the mold so it coats the walls evenly. The wax is then chased: the seams and parting lines left by the mold are smoothed away by hand with warm tools until the wax reads as the original again.

Spruing, Investment, and the Lost Wax
The wax copy is then sprued — fitted with a branching tree of wax rods and a funnel-shaped cup. These channels will later carry molten metal in and let trapped air escape. The sprued wax is dipped over and over into a liquid silica slurry and dusted with fine sand, building a hard ceramic shell layer by layer.
Once the shell is thick enough, it goes into a kiln for burnout. The heat hardens the shell and melts the wax, which runs out completely. What remains is a hollow mold shaped entirely by absence — the "lost wax" that gives the method its name.

There is something fitting in a process built on a void waiting to be filled. Breakthrough captures that charged pause before a form arrives — the same held breath a foundry crew shares in the seconds before the pour.
The Pour, the Break, and the Patina
With the wax gone, the shell is reheated and the bronze goes in. Silicon bronze — an alloy of copper with a little silicon, favored in art foundries because it flows cleanly — is melted in a crucible and poured at roughly 1,900 to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit into the still-hot mold. After the metal cools, the ceramic shell is broken away, revealing a rough bronze that still wears its sprues like branches. Those channels are cut off, sections cast separately are welded together, and the surface is chased once more, this time in metal, until the joins disappear.
Only then comes the patina. Chemicals are brushed onto the heated or cooled bronze to coax out browns, greens, and blacks, sealing the piece and giving it the depth collectors recognize. It is worth remembering that hand-built ceramic and stoneware never travel this road — those works are fired in a kiln and finished as clay. Bronze is a translation, and the foundry is where a sculptor's original learns to speak in metal.
What begins as soft clay under a thumb can end as something built to outlast centuries. The artist makes the gesture; the foundry makes it permanent.
