Artist's Statement:

I made her clean of binding. Her initial posture was relaxed. Before finishing I looked at her and saw a safe and understandable piece. I needed to change that.

I bent her limbs, brought her head down. The twine began at her ankles. It traveled upward with intention — crossing her knees, her torso, her arms — until it reached her face and took her sight. It was not decorative. It was symbolic. It is load-bearing.

That is the cruelest truth this work holds: at some point, the restraints stop being something done to us and begin to feel like something we are made of.

That is what I want you to sit with.

She is not alone in the boat. None of us are. We each carry bindings the audience cannot see — inherited ones, systemic ones, self-constructed ones, ones placed on us before we had language for resistance. Her body makes the invisible visible. Look at her and ask what is wound around you that you have stopped noticing. Ask who else is sitting in the boat, similarly wrapped, similarly struggling, similarly mistaken for still. She is a passenger. So are you. So are we all.
