This is about a pause in a journey. The figure has stopped; and the face is fixed in a far-off stare, deep in thought. The face does not want to be disturbed — that stare, implying something has been left behind, or something still waits ahead — but here, in this moment, neither matters. The body too has drawn up into itself, gathered and still, while the gaze travels somewhere the rest of us cannot follow. I did not plan this stillness; it arrived on its own. What I can say is that the figure has earned its silence. We are left to wonder what it sees out there, and whether it means to come back.
